Gunning goes in yet another Foyles restructure

Fifteen months on from the restructure that preceded Chairman Christopher Foyle's departure for Monaco, Foyles has again restructured. This time the principal casualty is the much-respected Head of Buying Kate Gunning, who joined three years ago, and whose role has been made redundant as the chain "streamlines" its operation - a streamlining which leaves Foyles without a recognisable public face in the trade and which will inevitably raise questions as to whether it is being readied for market.  Gerald Baker, Product Administation Supervisor, is going, his role also terminated.

C&R launches new imprint under James Gurbutt

As publishers in London and around the world retrench, one at least is expanding. Constable & Robinson has appointed former Harvill Secker hand James Gurbutt, a casualty of the recent Random House restructure, to head a new imprint.

Lord Weidenfeld, a reminder of a golden age

There are few people left now who remember the occasion in November 1949 when a young George Weidenfeld and Nigel Nicolson proudly launched the imprint that, via an ampersand, would forever link their names. Nicolson died in September 2004, but Eric Hobsbawm, 92 and, like Lord W, still as busy as ever, was at Brown's Hotel again yesterday to sign the guestbook. And it was Lady Antonia Fraser, who started her career at W&N having just come down from Oxford, who proposed the toast, as she did for her former boss’s 50th, 60th, 70th and 80th birthdays. “I’m taking bookings for 2019,” she said, adding that she was certain Lord Weidenfeld would be around to celebrate.
