A new bookshop and gallery, Woolfson & Tay, opens tomorrow (11 September) in Bermondsey, South-east London, with a lively programme of events and exhibitions already planned.

It is 80 years since the then 19-year-old Christina Foyle inaugurated the first Foyles Literary Luncheon. Held on 21 October 1930,  it went on to become an institution, defining a golden era of British publishing, and it is to be celebrated with a black tie, gala dinner on Thursday 21 October 2010, attended by “a host of famous friends from the worlds of literature, stage, broadcasting, journalism and screen”.

Waterstone's like-for-like sales declined 2.6%, and overall sales declined 1.6%, in the 19 weeks ending 4 September 2010. But parent HMV noted, in advance of the group's annual general meeting, that the trend in the bookseller's like-for-like sales was "improving", and that its market share performance had improved too.

Blackwell's is to scale down its head office operations and to set up an employee partnership along the lines of the one operated by John Lewis.
