Filming of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (Weidenfeld) has just begun in land-locked Clapham and, coincidentally, scenes are being shot in a house belonging to neighbours of Cactus TV's Amanda Ross, whose Richard & Judy Book Club brought Paul Torday's debut novel to public attention and helped make it a bestseller.

The film is being directed by Lasse Hallstrom and stars Ewan McGregor, Kristen Scott Thomas and Emily Blunt in the leading roles. It is currently scheduled for release in 2012.

In what's believed to be a first, author Tess Gerritsen yesterday addressed a rapt audience of doctors, surgeons, nurses and other medical staff at the Royal Bolton Hospital as part of the Reading Agency's Six-Book Challenge, the UK-wide annual incentive scheme for less confident adult readers.

The Royal Bolton Hospital won the visit by the US crime writer via a prize draw, offered by the Reading Agency in association with the Campaign for Learning and Transworld Publishers, as a result of its participation in both the Six-Book Challenge and the Campaign for Learning's Learning at Work Day.

Gerritsen, a former medic who began writing fiction while on maternity leave, talked about her own personal experiences as a physician - a background that allows her to bring depth and authenticity to her medical thrillers.

Paula Elliott, Library Services manager at the hospital said: "We are really pleased that Tess has come to the hospital. We have visiting speakers of course, but this has enlivened our staff library and encouraged all staff to read novels as well as their usual medical texts."

Gerritson, who came from an appearance at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, commented: "I'm really delighted to come to Royal Bolton Hospital. The Six-Book Challenge is a fantastic initiative to bring the widest audience to books, and direct to their place of work too"

To Gallery 27 in Cork Street, Mayfair, for the launch of Gallery Girl, the latest comedy from Wendy Holden. The party, all pink fizz and delectable canapes, also marked "the combined ninetieth birthday celebrations" of Holden and her hubby, Jonathan McLeod. And very good they looked on it too - Holden still has those great cheekbones.

You really do have to admire Andrew Franklin (left). He works hard, runs an egalitarian company that publishes great books and, at the same time, makes money. Yet he remains his own man ("I would rather shut up shop and switch off the lights than publish George Bush"), always puncturing pomposity and refusing to kow-tow to convention. And he has his priorities sorted. Who else would put this on his Out of Office:

I am on holiday until Tuesday 31 August when I will delete your email. If it is urgent you can ring me on my mobile but this is August, so take some time off and read a good book.  Buy
Rift in Time, Raja Shehadeh's new book, just out: "poignant, heartbreaking... quiet intimate storytelling", Sunday Times. If you promise to read it, I promise to read your email.
Andrew

He's in Edinburgh for the Festival, if you want to find him, and he'll be speaking in next week's LRB debate on the future of books.
