The Duckworth Late Summer Party has become the traditional start-of-term event for publishers and agents. Mostly, it has taken place at the October Gallery; and a third tradition is lovely weather. This year, the venue moved to the Estorick Collection in Islington, and the weather as 6.30pm approached was atrocious. But, on cue, the skies cleared, and the only reminder of the earlier rain was the occasional fat droplet from the overhanging trees in the gallery's courtyard.

An English lunch for a Gallic star

For a small publisher of translated fiction, lunch at Rules may seem an indulgence. But when you publish Muriel Barbery, you have every reason to entertain there, with good Sancerre and St Emilion Grand Cru to boot. Gallic Books has sold more than 200,000 copies of Barbery's The Elegance of the Hedgehog. Furthermore, Barbery is the author of an earlier novel called The Gourmet, and both works show an appreciation of fine dining.
