Authors speaking at this year’s annual Ilkley Literature Festival are set to explore a wide range of topical subjects, including what it means to be British, how science affects us all, the history of famous people and places, and the myths and truths behind environmental issues. Running from 1 to 17 October, the festival will host more than 200 events over 17 days, with appearances by local, national and international authors, poets and journalists at a wide-ranging programme of talks, readings, workshops and master classes for adults and children.

Penguin's Rugby warehouse, its teething problems of six years ago a distant memory, has shipped its half-billionth unit. The distributor designated a copy of J D Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye as the one to mark the achievement, and delivered it to Foyles in Charing Cross Road. Travelling Light Theatre Company's production of Bob, Man on the Moon, based on Simon Bartram's picture book (Templar), has just finished a four-month UK tour. Bartram (right) caught up with the show in York, and met Frank Wurzinger, who plays Bob. Bartram said: "Frank was a fizzing, living, breathing Bob and I'd be delighted to have him guide me around the Moon. The show was a joy."

Amazon.com yesterday announced that the late Stieg Larsson, author of the Millennium Trilogy, had become the first author to sell over one million Kindle books and is the first member of the new "Kindle Million Club", which recognizes authors whose entire body of work has sold over one million copies in the Kindle Store.
