Riley has won Observer Food Monthly award in ethical category; 'I’m a huge fan of Ryan Riley and Life Kitchen' says Nigella Lawson
Bloomsbury Publishing has signed Life Kitchen, the debut cookbook from Ryan Riley, winner of OFM’s Best Ethical Food Project 2018. World rights were acquired in a deal with Claudia Young at Greene & Heaton.
Editorial director Natalie Bellos said: "Ryan is doing groundbreaking work, combining his knowledge of food and science to create recipes for people living with cancer and those who care for them, and reigniting their enjoyment of flavour. We are proud and excited to be working with him."
The book will be published in Spring 2020 and Bloomsbury will be supporting publication with a major publicity and marketing campaign, including a nationwide book tour.
Riley is a 25-year-old food writer and stylist who has worked for print publications such as Sainsbury’s Magazine, Waitrose Food and BBC Good Food.
In 2017 he launched Life Kitchen, a cookery initiative set up to help people living with cancer and those caring for them. Offering free cookery classes specifically tailored to the needs of people who have received chemotherapy, Ryan’s recipes focus on powerful flavours such as umami, citrus and fragment herbs.
He is working with Professor Barry Smith, a world authority in taste and the founder of the Centre for the Study of the Senses at the University of London, to identify ingredients, tastes and techniques that can shape his recipes.
Riley grew up in Sunderland and was inspired to set up Life Kitchen after watching his late mother, Krista, lose her sense of taste during cancer treatment.
He said: "I’m so excited to be writing the Life Kitchen cookbook, it’s been a dream since I started the classes. The book will be developed and tested in the Life Kitchen classes giving it a unique and thorough perspective for a cookbook. To have the investment from Bloomsbury to make this the best book Life Kitchen can offer is an honour and a privilege and I’m so so excited."
"I’m a huge fan of Ryan Riley and Life Kitchen," said TV chef and best-selling cookery writer Nigella Lawson.
