New edition has front lighting
Amazon is introducing front-lighting to its entry-level Kindle e-reader. The new edition of the device, to be released on 10 April, will have four LEDs, with the screen resolution remaining at 167ppi. The price is up £10, to £69.99.
The Kindle Paperwhite (£119.99) - until now, Amazon's cheapest front-lit Kindle - has five LEDs and a 300ppi resolution.
Kobo no longer sells an e-reader without front-lighting. Its cheapest model, the Aura Edition 2 (212ppi), is priced at £99.99.
Eric Saarnio, head of Amazon devices, Europe, said: "Customers consistently tell us how much they appreciate having a front light on Kindle devices so they can read in any environment - even in bed at night. The team worked hard to bring this customer-favourite feature to our most affordable device, and we're excited to introduce the all-new Kindle - the first Kindle under £100 with a built-in adjustable front light."
