Working with Ying Chang Compestine
Howard Reeves at Abrams Books has signed The Chinese Emperor's New Clothes, by illustrator David Roberts and Ying Chang Compestine. Abrams has world English rights through Christine Isteed at Artist Partners Ltd, and will publish in January 2018.
The Chinese Emperor's New Clothes is a twist on the Hans Christian Andersen story, and tells the story of Ming, who is nine years old when he becomes the emperor of China, and who devises a plot to foil his corrupt ministers.
Reeves said: "I had discovered early on that David had formally studied fashion design, and had lived in Hong Kong for a time. His love of couture is evident in his early fairy tale books that we worked on, especially Cinderella. When Ying approached me with her Chinese version of the Emperor's New Clothes - a story she and friends had secretly shared in Communist China - I immediately thought of David. Ying and David together have created a very clever and humorous story based on the original tale."
