Author and environmentalist advocates radical reappraisal of agricultural practices
Chloe Currens, senior commissioning editor at Penguin Press, has bought world rights in Swallow This by George Monbiot in a "major deal" with Antony Harwood of Antony Harwood Ltd. Allen Lane will publish the book in the UK; US and Canadian rights are with Penguin.
Swallow This is scheduled for 2021. Monbiot said: ""Farming and fishing are by far the biggest causes of ecological collapse. But we look the other way. We focus instead on plastic and human population growth. Because we see conventional food production and consumption as central to our identities, these are the last issues we want to confront. The food industry, more than all other factors put together, is destroying the living world. And it appears to be insatiable." The author advocates a new global food system, encompassing microbial protein, alternative organic horticulture, and wilder fields and forests.
Currens said: "I'm thrilled that all of George Monbiot's skills as an environmental campaigner, an investigative journalist, a Guardian columnist and a self-confessed troublemaker will come to the fore in Swallow This. We urgently need to rethink the way we produce, distribute and consume our food, and with his rigour, originality and sense of adventure, George will help us do just that."
Penguin is to publish the audiobook edition of Monbiot's Feral: Searching for Enchantment on the Frontiers of Rewilding, read by the author, in January.
