On this day in 1889 the American author and lawyer Erle Stanley Gardner was born.

Gardner wrote numerous novels, short pieces and non-fiction books, but he was most well known for the Perry Mason detective series, which ran to over 80 novels.

Somewhat obscurely, Gardner is a well-known name among avid crossword puzzle solvers, due to the fact that his first name contains an unusual pattern of common letters and few other famous people have the name Erle. As of January 2012, he was had the highest ratio (5.31) of mentions in the The New York Times crossword puzzle to mentions in the rest of the newspaper among all other people since 1993.
