B&N backs US Selfies

News - Prizes Friday, 26th February 2021

Retailer sponsors prize scheme for self-publishing; Author Solutions also on board for joint BookBrunch/Publishers Weekly awards

Author Solutions is sponsoring the awards at the platinum level and Barnes & Noble Nook at the gold level. Derrick Purvis, senior vice-president of Author Solutions, said: "We’re thrilled Publishers Weekly expanded the Selfies award to the US. It’s a great time for self-published authors to get recognition from one of the most influential voices in the industry. We’re proud to be able to support that."

The deadline for the awards has also been extended for to March 8, 2021, at 11:59 pm EST. According to Jo Henry, managing director of BookBrunch, and one of the managers of the US Selfies: "We’ve had an excellent response to this year’s call for submissions, but we are extending the deadline another week to give sponsors the opportunity to further promote the awards to their audience of indie authors and encourage them to submit their work."

IngramSpark, a platinum sponsor for the second year of the awards, is using social media and its newsletters to encourage its self-published authors to submit their titles published in 2020. Paige Allen, director of IngramSpark, said: "We are honoured to once again be a part of the U.S. Selfies awards. We are impassioned by channels such as these awards that highlight the unheard voices and unread stories in self-publishing."

Two panels of judges, drawn from the publishing, bookselling and library worlds, have been appointed, one panel specialising in children’s books and the other in adult fiction. Shortlists for the awards are expected to be announced in May 2021. The prize winners — one in each category — will be named during the American Library Association virtual annual conference, June 23 – 29, 2021. Each winning title is awarded $1,000 cash, with a special book marketing package provided by Publishers Weekly valued at $5,000.

Tim Westover, author of The Winter Sisters, won the inaugural US Selfies prize, which focused on adult fiction published during 2019. Future years are expected to include non-fiction, in addition to children’s books and adult fiction.
